Background of the Study
Postnatal depression (PND) is a serious mental health condition that affects many women after childbirth. It is characterized by symptoms of sadness, irritability, fatigue, and hopelessness, which can significantly impair a mother’s ability to care for her newborn and engage in daily activities (Sulaimon & Akintoye, 2024). While postnatal depression is commonly linked to hormonal changes following childbirth, other factors such as social isolation, lack of support, and personal history of depression can exacerbate the condition. In Nigeria, PND remains an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition, with many women failing to receive appropriate care due to social stigma, lack of awareness, and insufficient mental health resources (Amos & Ismail, 2023).
Psychiatric nurses play an integral role in the management of postnatal depression by providing not only psychiatric care but also emotional support, psychoeducation, and therapeutic interventions. Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja, Kogi State, serves as a key healthcare provider for women in the region, offering specialized care for mental health conditions such as postnatal depression. Despite the vital role of psychiatric nurses, there is a lack of research focusing on their specific contributions to the management of postnatal depression within this context.
This study will explore the role of psychiatric nurses in managing postnatal depression at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. The findings will provide an understanding of the specific responsibilities of psychiatric nurses, the challenges they face, and the effectiveness of their interventions in managing this condition. This investigation is crucial in improving the care and support systems for women affected by postnatal depression, as well as informing future mental health policy and practice.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Postnatal depression is a significant public health issue affecting a considerable number of women in Nigeria, yet it remains poorly recognized and inadequately treated. Many women experiencing postnatal depression do not receive the necessary mental health care, often due to the stigma associated with mental illness and the lack of trained healthcare providers. Psychiatric nurses, as primary providers of mental health care in hospitals, have the potential to offer essential support to women dealing with postnatal depression. However, there is limited understanding of the specific role psychiatric nurses play in the management of this condition.
Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, provides care to a wide range of patients, including women experiencing postnatal depression. Despite the center’s efforts to address mental health needs, there remains a gap in research on the role of psychiatric nurses in the management of postnatal depression, particularly within the Nigerian healthcare system. Without a clear understanding of psychiatric nurses' contributions, there is limited guidance on how to enhance their effectiveness and address the challenges they face in managing postnatal depression.
This study seeks to investigate the role of psychiatric nurses in managing postnatal depression at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. It will identify the interventions provided by psychiatric nurses, the challenges they encounter, and how their efforts can be improved to better support women struggling with postnatal depression.
